Definition
Two-factor authentication (2FA) requires two different proofs of identity before granting access — typically something you know (password) plus something you have (phone app or hardware key).
Real-World Example
After entering your password, an authenticator app shows a six-digit code that changes every 30 seconds. You enter that code to finish signing in.
