Also known as: scramble/descramble, data scrambling

Definition

Scrambling data mixes it so it looks unreadable in transit or at rest; unscrambling restores the original with the right key or process. Everyday talk for encrypting and decrypting, though true encryption uses well-studied algorithms.

Real-World Example

A messaging app scrambling a photo on your phone and unscrambling it only on the friend’s device so a stolen backup is useless.
