Ransomware is malware that encrypts files or locks systems and demands payment for restoration. Paying does not guarantee recovery and may fund further crime.
Real-World Example
A clinic’s shared drives are encrypted overnight. Staff see ransom notes demanding payment within 72 hours. Offline backups allow recovery without paying.
