Key exchange is how two parties agree on a shared secret key over an insecure channel, often using public-key math, so they can encrypt further messages symmetrically.

Real-World Example

During a TLS handshake, your browser and a website perform a key exchange so subsequent page data can be encrypted quickly with a shared session key.
