Definition
Contact tracing records who was near whom — by interviews, phone apps, or location data — to map the spread of disease or, in other systems, social networks. Design choices decide whether the data stays on the phone or in a central database.
Real-World Example
A COVID exposure app that exchanged anonymous Bluetooth codes, versus a system that uploaded GPS trails to a government server.
